As school has commenced for the year and schoolchildren have settled into their school year, Aldah Sithole (12) from Diepsloot is without a school due to no birth certificate and being declined admittance into any school.

South Africans across the country tore themselves away from their offices today in order to generously give 67 minutes of their precious time to a cause on their hearts. It is a day where many leave their comfort zones and get their hands dirty. It is where, for a brief moment, they are afforded the opportunity to be the change they want to see. It is not a noble cause; it is a cause that we have been called to, in the memory of our greatest leader Nelson Mandela.
The message behind Mandela Day is loud and clear. Everyone has the responsibility and the ability to change the world for the better. It is a day to honour the legacy of Nelson Mandela and his values, through active volunteering. It is an international initiative started by the United Nations in 2009 to honour our former president’s spirit of self-sacrifice. On Mandela Day, people around the world are encouraged to spend at least 67 minutes doing something positive for their communities in honour of the 67 years that Nelson Mandela spent fighting for a free and democratic South Africa.
Today I’m an amazing, talented and driven young woman because I received relevant guidance. It all began when I was a appointed a mentor whom later became my second mother. Who knew an hour of mentorship every fort night could build such a strong bond? Like I always tell my mentor “you’ll never understand how much of a great help you’re to me.”
